John debt-forgiveness may in fact be a way to get the economies going again BUT if that were to become the accepted practice why would you or I or any government just run up a huge debt then claim we couldn't pay it back and claim debt-forgiveness? There has to be a penalty! For governments I suggest 1) the individuals responsible never ever be allowed to hold any public office again and 2) That counties financial business be under the "guidance" of a group of the major creditors to ensure the government gets it house in order.

Dave, what do you mean by "the individuals responsible"? That would be the entire government. You can't say this program X (and all who voted for it) is responsible for the debt while program Y isn't. They're all components of the same equation.

ReplyDeleteIf we say debt forgivness is the way to go then to prevent mis-use we HAVE to hold someone responsible. For government debt that would the ELECTED--congresspersons. senators and adminstration and not just the current ones. They are responible for voting in these excessive laws which spend money we don't have--the people don't vote on this stuff.
Maybe it's a poor penalty to say they can never even run again. If you think I'm wrong "what your penalty?"
