Whether it is c&t or carbon tax, the end...Tim:

Whether it is c&t or carbon tax, the end result will looks as you suggest: expensive hydrocarbon energy. And such "punitive" measures are how you curb undesirable actions like burning too much gas.

If you don't think the problem (GHG's) is something to worry about all solutions are awful, simply because they cost mucho for no upside.

So there are two issues: 1) Are GHG emissions a real problem we need to address? and 2) What is the least economically burdensome approach to mitigate the problem?

I favor a revenue-neutral carbon tax rebated against payroll taxes. In other words, $5 gas and no FICA. I think we'd learn to love smaller cars, no-till, and wearing sweaters if we could be sure SS was solvent and our fatter after-tax income more than covered our new fuel costs for the vast majority of Americans.

As fuel becomes more expensive good things happen for agriculture. For one, ethanol comes closer to making sense (and profit).

But you are right. If you don't buy into climate change, no GHG solution makes any sense.John Phippshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03245790061133614986noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27951078.post-75434878992721581082009-05-03T08:09:00.000-06:002009-05-03T08:09:00.000-06:00John my largest problems with carbon "taxing" are ...John my largest problems with carbon "taxing" are one,it is punative against those who generate "new wealth" from natural resources including food and energy, and second it will produce a large increase in the cost of both, which will produce a rationing effect on the economy, that will affect all but the wealthy and increase the income gap between classes that you have discussed in previous posts.Timnoreply@blogger.com
