I have a friend/colleague at IL State University who previously led the instruction effort of faculty to teach the use of the clickers. When she first introduced the concept to me I thought it as odd, being of the old fashioned dialogue and give and take in a classromm I wasn't sure how long they would last. It has been several years since they were introduced and almost all campus uses them in some capacity, especially I believe in lecture halls where now you have a greater ability to engage the class in a room of 75+ rather than talking at them. Plus the other great advantage they have is the ability for a class member to answer an in-class question without fear of being wrong in front of peers or allows everyone rather than a single person to answer.
We have a similar system at Iowa State. Many professors use them to collect attendance points. Of course, many students will pass their clicker off to another classmate if they're planning on skipping class.
